Orthodontics for Adults FAQs

Read the frequently asked questions we've received about orthodontic treatment options for adults.

  • Are adults candidates for orthodontic treatment?

Yes! If you’re an adult, it’s not too late to correct problems such as crooked or crowded teeth, overbites, underbite, incorrect jaw position, or jaw-joint disorders with adult braces or Invisalign.

  • Are there any food and drink restrictions with braces or Invisalign clear aligners?

While undergoing orthodontic treatment doesn't mean you'll have to stop eating your favourite foods, you may need to make a few small changes.

Though clear aligners are removable so you can eat all your favourite foods, you should only drink water while you are wearing your clear aligners.

With braces, avoid chewy foods such as bagels and licorice and crunchy foods such as chips, ice and popcorn.

  • How have braces options changed in recent years?

Braces have become more low-profile in appearance, as well as more comfortable to wear and easier to care for.

They may be a suitable treatment option for adults with more complex orthodontic issues that cannot be treated using Invisalign clear aligners.

  • What are the benefits of a straightening my teeth?

Straight teeth can help you effectively speak, bite and chew. Properly aligned teeth may also contribute to overall oral health, as they may be easier to brush, floss, and clean. The ability to take better care of your teeth by practicing proper oral hygiene may help prevent cavities, periodontal disease and other health problems.

  • What can I expect from my first orthodontic visit?

During your first visit, we'll perform an initial orthodontic assessment and answer your preliminary questions.

We will then recommend appropriate treatment options, taking your needs, lifestyle factors and personality into account, in addition to other important aspects of orthodontic treatment.

  • What orthodontic treatment options do you offer for adults?

We offer a wide range of discreet braces options, including braces and Invisalign clear aligners.

  • What are braces?

Braces can be a good treatment option for adults with more complex cases who may be unable to use Invisalign clear aligners. For most patients, treatment time typically ranges from 1 to 2 years.

  • What are Invisalign Clear Aligners?

Invisalign clear aligners are a treatment option to straighten your teeth and change the appearance of your smile without relying on metal braces. Using 3D computer imaging technology, Invisalign can create a prediction of your treatment plan, from the initial position of your teeth to the final desired position.

Based on this plan, a series of clear plastic aligners will be made to fit your teeth during each stage of your treatment process. These clear aligners are difficult to detect to the casual observer when worn, and you can remove them to eat, brush and floss your teeth.

  • How long does orthodontic treatment take for adults?

Your treatment time will be determined by your orthodontist based on your specific needs and treatment plan.

  • Can orthodontic treatment help my jaw pain?

Yes, our orthodontists can test for, diagnose and provide a treatment plan for TMJ Disorder using a two-step treatment orthodontic process.

Depending on your needs, treatment options may include bite splints, surgery and more.

  • Can orthodontic treatment help me sleep better?

Yes, our orthodontists can help correct misaligned teeth and jaws or recommend a custom-fitted oral appliance to allow for easier breathing during sleeping.

  • How much will my treatment cost?

Your individual needs will factor into the cost your orthodontic care. There is no standard fee.  During your comprehensive orthodontic examination, our orthodontists will assess your treatment needs and quote a fee that's relevant to you treatment plan.

We offer flexible financing options to help meet your family budget.
